Focused on self-representation, Hocks work can be defined as a reflection on the nature of works of art and artists, creating carefully planned and staged compositions that combine photographic and painting techniques. The artist thus uses irony and subtlety to explore the characters traditionally related to the Dutch people-whose painting is highly influential in his work- and his figure customarily appears in the guise of innumerable masks. The result is a body of work that flows smoothly between categories such as the grotesque and the absurd.
